Arroyo Seco Weekend 2017
Pasadena, CA
June 24, 2017
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers kicked off the third leg of their 40th Anniversary tour at the inaugural Arroyo Seco Weekend festival in Pasadena, CA.
In the shadow of the fabled Rose Bowl stadium, Tom and the guys headlined after sets from Alabama Shakes, Dawes, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Meters and many more.
“Into The Great Wide Open” made its tour debut, an apropos choice considering Arroyo Seco was the first Southern California show of the tour.
Before the show, Tom and the band huddled in the dressing room, running through the song with acoustic guitars, an electric piano and drummer Steve Ferrone pounding out the beat on a coffee table. They talked through the arrangements and discussed harmony vocals with the Webb Sisters.
“Let’s run through it,” Mike Campbell said, with that, Tom started singing.
Eddie waited til he finished high school
He went to Hollywood, got a tattoo
He met a girl out there with a tattoo too
The future was wide open
They moved into a place they both could afford
He found a night club he could work at the door
She had a guitar and she taught him some chords
The sky was the limit
Into the great wide open
Under them skies of blue
Out in the great wide open
A rebel without a clue
Rockin’ Around With You
Mary Jane’s Last Dance
You Don’t Know How It Feels
Forgotten Man
You Got Lucky
I Won’t Back Down
Free Fallin’
Into The Great Wide Open
Don’t Come Around Here No More
It’s Good To Be King
Crawling Back to You
Wildflowers
Learning to Fly
Yer So Bad
I Should Have Known It
