Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have been a staple of American rock for decades, and even years after the frontman’s passing, the band’s music continues to thrive. The legendary musician’s Greatest Hits compilation is one of the longest-charting albums on the Billboard rankings, and this week, it improves its standing across every list on which it appears as people just can’t get enough of the group’s work.
Greatest Hits Rises on the Billboard 200
On the Billboard 200, Greatest Hits lifts from No. 123 to No. 120. According to Luminate, the collection moved 11,100 equivalent album units in the past tracking frame. That’s a growth of 4% from last week’s sum of just under 10,700.
Tom Petty’s Continued Presence on the Rock Charts
Beyond the Billboard 200, Greatest Hits is also gaining ground on two of Billboard’s rock-focused rankings. It advances from No. 26 to No. 24 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart, while it climbs from No. 20 to No. 19 on the Top Rock Albums list. Both of these moves may seem modest, but they contribute to the album’s current growth.
Tom Petty’s Chart-Topping Rock Classic
Over the years, Greatest Hits has risen to the top spot on two of the three charts it currently appears on. The album once reached No. 1 on both the Top Rock & Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums rankings. The only roster where it missed the throne was the Billboard 200, where it came up just one space short.
One of the Longest-Charting Albums of All Time
Now in its six-hundred-and-seventh week on the Billboard 200, Greatest Hits ranks among the longest-running albums in the history of the chart. Its tenure on the all-genre ranking is especially impressive, as it has yet to reach 400 weeks on either of the rock charts.
It currently sits at 391 weeks on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums list and 387 frames on Top Rock Albums tally.
Tom Petty’s Legacy Continues to Grow
Since Petty’s passing in 2017, his music has remained on the charts more often than not, largely thanks to Greatest Hits. As streaming and catalog consumption continue to grow, fans keep returning to the late rock icon’s biggest songs. Among all of his releases, this compilation stands out as the go-to collection, consistently ranking as one of the most popular rock albums in the country.
