Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers commenced the final leg of the 2010 Mojo Summer Tour in fine fashion Thursday night, a homecoming of sorts for a band whose roots can be found just up the road in Gainesville.

With the legendary ZZ Top on board to open the tour's final ten shows, the Mojo tour promises to be a rock 'n roll fan's dream, and Billy Gibbons and company set out to prove it in Tampa with a killer set of trademark Texas blues.

Despite having lived in Southern California for most of his life, Tom will always be a Florida boy at heart, and the fans in Tampa greeted their native son like a returning hero upon taking the stage. As friends and family looked on, the Heartbreakers brimmed with confidence, tearing through their nearly two-hour show while shooting smiles and nods to friendly faces in the crowd.

"I can't tell you how much this night means to me and the band," Tom said, wiping the sweat from his face as the last notes of the "American Girl" encore echoed in the arena. "Thank you, Florida, and goodnight!"

North Carolina, you're up next! Come see us in Raleigh and Charlotte this weekend, and remember to check back for more from the Mojo tour!

i was on the 6th row for tampa and my only complaint was that it was over too soon! 2 hours of TPHB is just not enough for me!!!! it was like being swept away to a rock and roll dreamworld-amazing!!

Advanced Member Group:Paid Members Posts:193 Joined:26-June 10 LocationPanama City, Florida Posted Today, 04:53 PM This was my favorite-est Tom Petty concert EVER!!! What a Blast!!! OMG, they put me on the 2nd row for having a winning video in the HOW HAS THE BAND INSPIRED YOU? video contest!!! I am so THANKFUL to tompetty.com. 1st they put me on the front row for hosting a MOJO Listening Party and now, this. I couldn't have been happier! I only took a couple of pictures cuz I already have a lot from the other two shows I attended and I just wanted to soak in the performance and enjoy every minute of it! There did seem to be a problem with some of the sound. I know Scott(I was on his side again) was having problems and was trying to get the sound guy to fix it. The other thing was I think one or maybe even two of Mike's guitars weren't tuned right but, they muscled through it. For those who want to complain about the same old set list, well, they got more fodder for their cannons. I really thought it would be nice to throw the rescheduled shows a bone but, it was not to be. Besides the tickets I won, I had two 26th row tickets that I bought back in March so, I've been waiting an extra four months regardless of the tickets I won. They could have said or done something, right? I guess they were too busy ROCKIN'!! The HIGHLIGHT of the show for me was during I Should Have Known It when Tom came over to my side of the stage, shaking his maracas(which I knew he would since this was my 3rd show on this tour) and I held up my MOJO LP. He looked right at it and gave me a nod and a real BIG smile!! Seriously, his whole face lit up when he saw the album and when he looked right at me, I think he may have recognized me from my video cuz I wore the same Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers headband. Eh, maybe, maybe not. Whatever! But, he damn sure saw the album and acknowledge it! I tried to get it autographed but, no, they left the stage too quick. Still, it was my favorite-est show ever!!

Great show, great lights, great set, great tunes, but I have to agee with happyflgirl. The sound was not of the great quality we have come to expect from Tom Petty. The sound was much better the last time he played the SPTimes Forum. Still, a good time , as always.

dear tom-thanks for the memory! mojo to me is the roots of southern rock and blues reminicent of duane allman--zz top was over the top doing what they do and having fun--the heartbreakers are so tight as a band its an honor to watch them work their magic--mike campbell is the undisputed king of note bending--that last show in cali will be a awesome event--wish i could go. rick

I went to MSG to see you guys in July, had bought the tickets for Tampa for the original show date in May. Was so looking forward to the show and when i thought it couldn't get any better then seeing Tom and the heartbreakers twice in two months my friend won tickets for FRONT ROW/CENTER!!!! I was living a dream 5 feet from the stage! The sound was amazing! Being that close to Tom Petty I was afraid my heart would stop and i would miss the show. Took me almost an hour to pick out my outfit! LOL I have gone to hundreds of concerts in the front and NOTHING has every come close! Wish I could have got his autograph that would made my life complete! I LOVE U TOM!!!!!

Hope you enjoyed the show! I saw your comment to me where you said Thanks Cookie Tench...Did my story take you back...Your welcome! Take care! Long Live Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!

In the 6th row. To the person who thought the sound was bad, we thought it was great, so maybe it was the acoustics of where you were sitting. I wish TPATH would've played longer. I think this was the 1st show we didn't hear "You Wreck Me". They played Carol instead which was a huge disappointment!
ZZ Top was awesome. We saw the about ten years ago in Orlando and they were even better this time!

It was GREAT seeing Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers after so many years...Both bands did a wonderful job...But I have to agree with happyflgirl and I thought it may have just been our seats but we also noticed the sound wasnt good...ZZ Tops sound was but when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers hit the stage it seemed like there were sound problems...There were points where we couldnt hear Tom at all either his mic wasnt up enough or the band were too loud...Distortion problems...Even with all that and the fact they didnt do some great hits like "Dont Do Me Like That" or "The Waiting" (two of my favorites) the show was still worth it...It was so awesome seeing all the guys up there together again!
happyflgirl's picture

The Heartbreakers looked good, look like they were relaxed and having fun, there was a nice light show and ZZ Top was a good opening act. We had great seats to the right of the stage on the first level. However, in my 25+ years of going to concerts, it was by far the worst sound quality I have ever heard. I don't know if it was the hall acoustics, where we were seated compared to how they had the speakers set up, or the sound mix itself. It ruined the whole show for me which was a disappointment after taking time off work to drive in 3 hours to see the show. Nobody every apologized or thanked the audience for the show being rescheduled from May to Sept either which would have been a nice touch.

One of your best tunes I've heard yet definitely not as well known as it should be. I promise I'm not just saying that because that's my name. Truly a great jam. I'm stoked it's on the Anthology! You guys for sure need to play it more often and get it out there. Hey I know...how about at the show Thursday???
aerocid's picture

My husband surprised me with tickets to the Tampa show on Thursday for our anniversary! I'm so excited. I have loved Tom Petty since I was a little girl... When I was 8 I was convinced that I was going to marry him! I live just outside of Gainesville (GO GATORS!) and every time I drive there I roll my windows down and crank up the Greatest Hits. This concert is going to be amazing. It will be my 3rd time seeing him live...it's worth the drive and worth the money!

My first favorite Rock Band was Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers...They were also my first Rock Concert! I was blessed enough to see them three times...First time at the Jai Lai in Casselberry, Florida...I was 17...Then once in Gainesville and once in Orlando...I am so excited to get to see them again after all these years...They are still my favorite rock band! Benmont was always my favorite but I love the whole band...My friend and I years ago went to Gainesville after an invite from Earl Petty...He was very kind and very proud of Tom showing us photos and talking about him the whole time...We went to a fish fry with him and he made hush puppies! I will never forget it! And the first time I went to see the band I was outside walking around with a rose in my hand that I had brought to give to Benmont and he walked out the side door and I about fell over! I got to give him the rose I had brought for him...I had a big crush on him ...Great memories, Great Music and Great Times! Cant wait till Thursday!!

Heard this live track from the show on Sirius last week. I almost would prefer hearing it as an encore to American Girl. It was that good.

It's not the tons of loot spent on both Darien concerts - to ensure all friends & family could enjoy you - it's not the 1,200 miles & travel to Tampa from here to see you again, and it's not the fact I didn't win the video contest, because they were all so good!! -- it's being so far from the stage in Tampa that " SUX "

maybe we stand a chance. that tom petty and the heartbreaker's will change the set list..for the last ten show's..pray with me..no more cover'si know tom rock's but we want all tom petty and the heartbreaker's stuff i love his solo song's but just think no cover's no solo..WOW!! what a show that would be."I should have known it", "into the great wide open","rebel's"",don't pull me over","the best of everything","you got lucky","jammin'ME","the trip to pirate's cove"," the waiting"',"a woman in love","room at the top","let yourself go"," wall's","breakdown"," fooled Again","lover's touch", "Let me up!(I've had Enough")"don't come around here no more","spike","here come's my girl","all or nothin'","too good to be true","makin' some noise","change of heart","you tell me",..25 song's no big deal..for his fan's that's all i'm tryin to say.

Definitely lookin' forward to the show! Seen you a couple of times, was at the gainesville show in 06. Been checkin out previous set lists, and make sure you keep Mystic Eyes in the encore for the tampa show. Definitely a headline song for your live performances.

I know this would be a heck of a long shot but I want to take a road trip from the Chicago area to Irvine, CA. It would be 2000 miles one way! I have a friend in Laguna Hills that wants to go also but we have no tickets! I was hoping T.P. or one of the boys could hook me up with a couple of tickets for the show! I'm sure you boys would like to help out a true fan that has been to two shows already this year. I figure this road trip will cost me around 2K, so I figure if I'm willing to go all that way just maybe you boys got a couple of extra tickets laying around that you don't need. I know this is a huge shot in the dark but hey it's Tom Petty & the Hearbreakers and who knows maybe it's a crazy enough request to make it work! Anyway thank's for a lifetime of great music! I hope this journey continues! P.S. I'm so glad Mike is felling better!

Tom -- you probably don't read these, but I'm going to say this anyway. I'm a Florida girl myself, born and raised in the Panhandle and now I'm going to college in Orlando in the fall and I'll be at this show. If there's ANY way you could play American Girl it would be fabulous.
