Irvine, CA 10/02

Oct 02 2010
Irvine, CA
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre

Whereas the Hollywood Bowl was surrounded by the kind of frenzied electricity that can only be found in Tinseltown, Saturday's show at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine had a more laid-back vibe that permeated throughout the venue as fans gathered in the late afternoon to watch ZZ Top.

Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard have been playing music together for four decades, but you wouldn't have known it watching them Saturday at Irvine. The Texas trio were all smiles onstage, chatting and joking with the audience in between hits including, "La Grange," "Waitin' for the Bus" and "Jesus Just Left Chicago." With the San Diego and Phoenix shows rescheduled for next week, Irvine was ZZ Top's final show on the Mojo tour. Everyone – from Billy, Dusty and Frank to their entire amazing crew – will be missed.

Saturday nights have been good nights on the Mojo tour, and Irvine lived up to expectations. Tom and the band slipped Chuck Berry's rocking “Carol” into the set early, which got the crowd dancing along to Benmont's rollicking piano riffs and Mike's soaring leads. "Good Enough," which Tom introduced as his favorite song off Mojo, continues to evolve and develop into a concert staple as the band explores the song’s crooks and crevices for more room to improvise. Watching the band play this song each night has been a lesson in the growth of a classic-in-the-making.

Next up is San Diego with Los Lobos! Two shows left on the Mojo tour, so be sure to check back for more photos, videos and recaps!

Mojo is a great title for the new release because Tom and the Boys definitely have theirs back! I've been going to Tom Petty concerts for 30 years and this was the best yet! I won 2'nd row seats from 95.5 KLOS, LA's Classic Rock Station, so my nephew and I had a great vantage point to see Tom and the Heartbreakers at the top of their game! Tom, Mike, Benmont and Ron are accomplished musicians who have been together for decades, combine that with Scott and Steve's incredible talent and you have the makings for fabulous music. The band was at the top of it's game in Irvine and treated us to the best concert I've been to! It was the perfect mix of the classics and great new tracks from Mojo. Thank you Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for a great show! I can't wait to see you again!

I saw TPAHB at the Gorge again this year...Love them so... Would have really loved seeing them with ZZTOP as well. This pic is of my son on a night out in Seattle with Billy. How cool is that but shortly after that his music studio was robbed of thousands of dollars worth of equipment one piece of which is irreplaceable to him and I am posting this in hopes if anyone reading this comes across a custom Ontario shop Randy Rhoads Jackson flying V Black serial number: RR2633 would greatly appreciate your contacting Seattle Police Dept re: case #10-318797 Or your local police dept and refer to this case no. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou

The show last night was outstanding! Especially loved "Learning to fly" What a performance Tom!! The show was the best I've seen yet. My favorites from the new album is "Something good coming" and "Good enough". By the way how many guitars did you change during the show :) Just wondering...I like the red shoes...:)

I'm super excited to see TP&H at the Irvine show this weekend for the first time. They are so amazing. Whenever I'm having a bad day all I have to do is jam some TP tunes and the world is right again. I hope they play "You Wreck Me" and "I Should Have Known It", my faves. Hope you feel better soon, Tom. Love you guys!
