Last night during band introductions at the Hollywood Bowl, Tom told the story about how the Heartbreakers started. After Mudcrutch broke up, Benmont Tench put together a band in hopes of recording a solo album. He invited Mike Campbell and Randall Marsh from Mudcrutch and added bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch, both Gainesville transplants that had moved to LA. The group convened at a studio in West LA for a session, which Benmont invited Tom down for to play harmonica. Tom walked into the studio’s control room, watched the band rehearse and came to a realization. “They were it,” he told the audience at the Hollywood Bowl Thursday night. “I had to find a way to steal this band.” The Heartbreakers were born.
