“Man, they sound good all the way back here!”
Standing in the hallway outside of his dressing room backstage at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, CA on Friday night, Tom Petty smiled widely as his head bobbed to the beat of “Rebel Heart,” the first single off opening band The Shelters’ debut album released last year.
The young Los Angeles rock four-piece aren’t strangers to the Heartbreaker camp, having opened the shows on last year’s Mudcrutch tour, but the connection runs deeper than simply serving as an opening act. Tom produced The Shelters’ 2015 EP and debut LP the following year, and both Chase Simpson and Josh Jove from the band played on the Heartbreakers’ 2014 album, Hypnotic Eye. When it came time to pick bands to open dates on the 40th Anniversary tour, The Shelters were a natural choice.
“Great job, guys,” Ron Blair said as Josh, Chase, drummer Sebastian Harris and bassist Jacob Pillot walked off the stage in Sacramento.
“Y’all sounded great!” Tom said as the guys reached their dressing room at the end of the hall.
See ya in a little more than a week, SoCal!
