The City of Brotherly Love showed some serious love to a music brotherhood of more than 40 years on Saturday night as Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers returned to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, a city they played on their very first tour back in 1977.
“Remember that gig?” Tom asked the rest of the band as they gathered in the hallway outside their dressing rooms before walking to the stage. “Rush played with us. It was at the Tower Theatre.”
“I remember that place,” keyboardist Benmont Tench said as guitarist Mike Campbell and multi-instrumentalist Scott Thurston looked on. “We played that theatre a few times, I think.”
The Webb Sisters and drummer Steve Ferrone and bassist Ron Blair joined their bandmates in the hallway as Tom gave tour manager Richard Fernandez the green light that everyone was ready.
Alright, everybody,” Tom said as they walked to the stage. “Let’s go give them a show!”
