  • Oslo (Norwegian Wood Festival) Recap

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' 2012 Summer Tour reached its northern most point on Friday, playing the Norwegian Wood Festival in Oslo, Norway.

Located in the Frognerparken, a 32-acres park in the middle of Oslo, the Norwegian Wood Festival is a three-day event that's been taking place every summer since 1992, featuring a diverse set of artists including Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Foo Fighters and Wilco.

Friday's bill opened with Monica Heldal, a a twenty-something Norwegian singer-songwriter that released her first single earlier this year. A tremendous guitar player and vocalist, Heldal played a terrific set to get the day started. As the natural amphitheater began to fill up, Lenny Kravitz took the stage and proceeded to rock the 8,000-plus in attendance with songs from throughout his catalog, including his newest album, Black and White America.

Backstage before their set, Tom and the guys were loose, hanging outside the small cabins that served as dressing rooms and catching up with friends and family. On his way back from the stage, Lenny - who opened for the Heartbreakers on his first ever tour - made his way over to say hello and reconnect with the guys. Tom and Lenny shared a hug and a promise to stay in touch.

The sold-out crowd in the Frognerparken were on their feet when Tom and the band launched into "Listen to Her Heart," but they weren't the only ones. Glancing over to the sidestage, Mike Campbell spotted Lenny and his band dancing in the wings, eliciting a wide grin from the Heartbreakers guitarist and co-captain. For the next two hours, the band played hits from throughout their career, leaving it all out onstage and waving goodnight to the Norwegian Wood festival just after 11 pm, sunlight still on the horizon.

London, here we come! The legendary Royal Albert Hall is next! Keep checking back for more from the 2012 Summer Tour!
