Oklahoma City got its first taste of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers on August 1, 1978 when the band played the Music Hall on the You’re Gonna Get It! tour.
Thirty-nine years later, Tom and the guys returned to OKC on Thursday for the opening night of their 40th Anniversary Tour.
The excitement was palpable inside the Chesapeake Energy Arena before the lights dropped for Joe Walsh's fantastic opening set, and the anticipation continued to build as the Heartbreaker road crew prepared the stage before Tom and the guys arrived to thunderous applause.
“Rockin’ Around With You,” the opening track off their debut album, got things started on the right foot and set the tone for what would be a two-hour-plus run through of the band’s entire catalogue, culminating with their first big hit, “American Girl.”
Highlights included an intense "It's Good to Be King" and a theatrical "Don't Come Around Here No More" with Tom pulling out from a trunk onstage the old top hat most familiar to fans from the song's video.
Joining the Heartbreakers on this tour are the Webb Sisters, who provided beautiful background vocals and harmonies all night long, but especially on "Mary Jane's Last Dance," "Don't Come Around Here No More" and "Learning to Fly."
