Budweiser Gardens, London, ONT
Canadians love Tom Petty, and Tuesday night's show at London, Ontario's Budweiser Gardens was proof positive.
All day long, fans lingered outside the arena's backstage gate, waiting for a glimpse of Tom and the band and hoping for an autograph or picture.
Nearby bars and restaurants blasted Heartbreakers' music as fans gathered to meet friends in anticipation of the show. Even the local record shop - Grooves - sold out of all of Tom's music on any format, save for an original copy of the Traveling Wilburys' first record.
Taking the stage just before 9 pm, the guys received a hero's welcome - a standing ovation all the way to the back of the 9,000-seat capacity arena
- before tearing into "Rock & Roll Star," a song about chasing the rock 'n roll dream. The entire front row sang right along.
"So you want to be a rock 'n' roll star?
Then listen now to what I say
Just get an electric guitar
Then take some time
And learn how to play
And with your hair swung right
And your pants too tight
It's gonna be all right"
