Jailhouse rock took on a whole new meaning for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Wednesday night, as the band played the first concert inside the prison yard of Fængslet, a former Danish state penitentiary outside Horsens, Denmark.
Opened in 1853, Fængslet served as a state prison for 153 years until government officials closed its doors in 2006. A museum occupies half of the complex, but local promoters reconfigured some of the outer buildings and grounds to host theatrical and musical performances of all kinds.
Russian fans lined the front row holding signs saying "Russia Loves Tom" welcoming the band onstage as dusk fell shortly after 9 pm. Everyone was on their feet and singing along by the end of "You Wreck Me," and "I Won't Back Down" had a whole different aura watching Tom sing defiantly at the walls of the nearly 200-year-old fortress.
