Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers kicked off their 21-show North American tour last night with two-plus hours of rock 'n roll in Evansville, Indiana that found Tom and the band dusting off some old gems and deep album cuts for a grateful standing-room-only crowd at the Ford Center.
Opening with The Byrds' "So You Want To Be A Rock And Roll Star," Tom and the guys dug deep on night one of the tour, crafting the setlist with hits, some choice covers and a handful of deep cuts that hadn't been performed in years. "Tweeter And The Monkey Man" - a song off The Traveling Wilburys' 1988 debut album - made it's live premiere and was among the show's many syandouts. Other bust outs included a rare, raucous cover of Muddy Waters' "I Just Want To Make Love To You" and "Louisiana Rain," a gorgeous acoustic track off Damn The Torpedos last played in 1989. Despite all the attention paid to the rarities, Tom and the band played plenty of hits, reeling through classics like "Free Fallin'," "Yer So Bad," "Refugee," "Don't Come Around Here No More" and "American Girl."
Hangout Music Fest, we're coming for ya! Hope to see you on the beach on Saturday!
