Though it’d been more than a decade since their last visit to Columbus, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were given a heroes’ welcome by the 15,000-plus screaming fans packed into the Schottenstein Center on the Ohio State University campus Wednesday night.
And while songs like “I Won’t Back Down,” “You Got Lucky,” and “Don’t Come Around Here No More” were big crowd favorites, one of the special moments of the night was when Tom strapped on his acoustic guitar, surrounded in total darkness onstage, save for a lone spotlight on his mic, and started “Wildflowers.” The title track off the album of the same name, “Wildflowers” is considered by many Heartbreaker fans to be among Tom’s finest songwriting efforts of his entire career, and the version in Columbus was stunning. The band dropped in perfectly behind Tom after the second verse, and Hattie and Charley Webb’s gorgeous harmonies were just icing on the cake.
