As many times as Tom and the band have played “Free Fallin’” since the release of Full Moon Fever back in 1989, the song always delivers.
Maybe it’s the beautiful simplicity with which it begins: Mike and Tom standing together in the spotlight at the center of an otherwise pitch-black stage, Rickenbacker guitars as their side.
Or maybe it’s the anthemic chorus, just five words that Tom sings twice over the top of soaring guitars, keys, bass and drums.
Or it could be the universality of the lyric. Most people haven’t been to Reseda, CA, or know what it’s like to glide down over Mulholland, but almost everyone has fallen in love, or had their heart broken, at some point in their life. “Free Fallin’” speaks to them both.
