I managed to get myself backstage after one of Gene's concerts in England in the mid-60s (he was very popular in Britain) by saying I was the president of his French fan club. I maintained a very thick 'French' accent throughout our meeting and Gene was very nice to me - I don't know whether he saw through me or not. It was a good thing he didn't speak French though.

TP, you probably don't know (well, I'd say you definitely don't), but Van Morrison certainly does, that Educating Archie was a long-running and very successful radio series in the 50s about a ventriloquist and his dummy Archie. Hmm, ventriloquism on the radio? that can't have been very hard...Anyway, people liked it, and it had a guest spot for comedians several of whom went on to be stars: well, you won't have heard of *them* either but you can read about them here

Great playlist once again, TP - thanks! One small point: Chicken Shack started out in the mid 60s, not the early 70s. (British people know these things.)
