“I don’t know what they call this place now, but I’ll always know it as Pine Knob!”

The mere mention of the venue’s original name elicited an eardrum-rattling roar from the 15,000-plus that packed the DTE Energy Music Theatre.

Sunday was a special day on the Hypnotic Eye tour. With lots of family in attendance on a gorgeous Michigan summer night, Tom and the band were all excited for a rare outdoor show on this arena tour.

It’s so cool to see how the audience reacts when they recognize a song.

At the United Center in Chicago on Saturday night, it only took hearing those three familiar guitar licks from Mike Campbell for fans to scream with approval at the beginning of “I Won’t Back Down.”

"Saturday night, and time for a little rock 'n roll!"

With that, Tom Petty tore into the rollicking guitar riff for Chuck Berry's "Carol," the first surprise of the band's second night at the sold-out Comcast Center outside Boston. Typically slotted for encores, "Carol" appearing in the first half of the show should have served as a not-so-subtle hint that Tom and the band were ready to rock.

My Morning Jacket once again got the night off on the right foot, opening with the gorgeous "The Way That He Sings." An epic "Gideon" followed, but the highlight of Jim James and company's opening

Sometimes, the most memorable moments of a show are just brief seconds of silence, and they’re gone in an instant.

After a rollicking, show-opening cover of The Byrds’ “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘n Roll Star,” Tom walked slowly toward stage left, playing a slow progression on his dark red Gibson SG.

Just as he reached the lip of the stage in front of Scott and Ron, TP stopped, looked out over the sold-out Moda Center and paused…one…two…maybe three seconds, allowing the tensions to build…before picking out the famous opening notes to “Mary
