There’s nothing like big amphitheater sing-a-longs.

Four songs into the set, Tom and the band played “Into The Great Wide Open” off the album of the same name released in 1991.

It’s been off the set list for the last several years but has emerged on this tour as an early-show favorite for the guys, especially when they’re playing to a big crowd of fans that know the words and sing along once the chorus comes around.

    “Into the great wide open
    under them skies of blue
out in the great wide open
    a rebel without a clue.”

Canadians love Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

It doesn’t seem to matter that the band has a song called “American Girl” or name-checks specific American cities and locations in their songs; our friends to the North have a deep love for this music and this band that transcends national borders.

That affection was apparent all day at Rogers Arena, from the fans that waited by the arena’s loading dock starting early in the morning in hopes of catching a glimpse of Tom and the band to the incredible ovation the band received when they took the stage a few

Sometimes, the most memorable moments of a show are just brief seconds of silence, and they’re gone in an instant.
After a rollicking, show-opening cover of The Byrds’ “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘n Roll Star,” Tom walked slowly toward stage left, playing a slow progression on his dark red Gibson SG.
Just as he reached the lip of the stage in front of Scott and Ron, TP stopped, looked out over the sold-out Moda Center and paused…one…two…maybe three seconds, allowing the tensions to build…before picking out the famous opening notes to “Mary

For the past six years, the Outside Lands Music Festival has called Golden Gate Park home, bringing music back to San Francisco's Polo Fields for the first time since the Grateful Dead in the mid- to late-'60s.

For their Saturday night headlining set, Tom and the band tipped their cap to the Haight Ashbury legends and Jerry Garcia, who passed away 19 years ago that day, with a cover of "Friend of the Devil" featuring Tom on harmonica and solos traded between Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell.

It was a classy move by a classy band.

The clock on the dressing room wall glowed 8:59, which usually means Tom and the band have started their walk to the stage, but tonight was special.

Earlier that day, Hypnotic Eye was named the number one album in the country, giving Tom and the guys their first number one hit in their illustrious careers.

As the guys gathered together minutes before show time, Steve Winwood stopped in to say hello and offer his congratulations.

“Rock ‘n roll is back on top, at least for one week,” Mike Campbell said with a grin.

“Thank you, Steve,” Tom said as

    There's a moment.

The moment when all the guys are in place, the stage is dark, the back line crew is at the ready, and everyone in the arena is awaiting that first note.

When the first chord that opens You Wreck Me rings out and the lights go up, it's like a celebration of all that is great about rock 'n roll music.

Everyone is all smiles onstage. Ferrone and Ron are locked in together as Mike, Tom and Scott's guitars float over the top of Benmont's organ. When Tom hits the microphone, the band is full steam.

It's the perfect way to open a show
