  • On the evening of Saturday June 8, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were unable to complete their concert at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles due to the Fire Marshal's judgement that the floor at the venue was overcrowded. The interruption of the show occurred 90 minutes into the performance that would likely have continued for approximately another 30 minutes. The satisfaction of fans is of paramount importance to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and the band shares the frustration of the fans in attendance that evening who deserved to experience the entire performance.

    As a result, Tom

    "Well....what should we play now?"

Tom tapped through his guitar pedals, a smile creeping across his bearded face as he prepped for the next song. It wasn't as if Sunday night's show was lacking anything to that point. "Honey Bee" stormed in early in the set, bringing along with it a smokin' version of J.J. Cale's "Thirteen Days" that seemed to pair perfectly with the epic blues rocker "Good Enough." Hearing "House in the Woods" is pretty rare, but getting "Walls" - the single off She's the One - in the same night almost never happens.

  • Statement From Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Regarding Last Night's Early Conclusion To The Concert At The Fonda Theatre In Los Angeles

First and foremost, the safety of our fans is our primary concern and the most important consideration. To those fans who attended last night's show at the Fonda Theatre, we are as frustrated as you are!

While we are still investigating exactly what happened we do know the following as of right now:

    1) The number of tickets sold was NOT above the legal capacity of the building. The venue and Ticketmaster documentation confirms this.

    2) The Fire Marshal

"Well, there's an official here beside the stage from the Los Angeles Fire Department that says the venue's too full, so they're asking that 100 people move from the floor to the balcony, or they're gonna shut it down. Ron Blair says he'll volunteer to go if need be. There, I've done my part. Now let me get back to doing what I do best."

Before launching into what became the show-closing "Melinda," Tom cracked a smile at Ron, who waved goodbye to the crowd as if he was leaving the stage, trying to make light of an unfortunate situation.

On tours like these (and especially when playing intimate venues like the Beacon and Fonda), there are moments that happen every night that go undocumented but hopefully not unnoticed. One of those moments happened Thursday night.

Shortly after Tom and Mike arrived at the Fonda Thursday night, the whole band huddled in a backstage dressing room underneath the old Hollywood theatre to discuss the setlist.

Inside a narrow rectangular room lined with vanity mirrors, Tom looked over setlists from the previous nights as Scott and Mike looked on.

    "You just missed Phil Jackson."

Tom smiled widely standing in the front lounge of his tour bus, the kind of perma-grin all true Lakers fans have upon meeting the legendary basketball coach that brought five championship trophies to Tinsel Town. Eleven Rings, Jackson's new book, lay on a nearby table, autographed to Tom by the Zen Master.

Whether Jackson's vist influenced the night's performance or not, no one will ever really know, but Tom and the guys seemed especially strong on Tuesday night, the second show of this West Coast residency at the Fonda.

Tom Petty stretched out his arms to embrace the avalanche of adoration that cascaded down onstage from the 1,200 fans jam-packed into the Fonda Theatre last night for the opening night of the Heartbreakers' six-night residency at the old Tinsel Town haunt.
Monday night's show continued Tom's stated goal for the New York and Los Angeles residencies: to dig into the band's catalog while at the same time playing a few choice covers as a tip of the hat to their heroes.
