Half an hour before show time, Richard Fernanadez stepped up the staircase at stage left and looked out over Boston’s Fenway Park.

“I’ve been with these guys for a long, long time, and this is the biggest headlining gig outside of a festival I’ve ever done with ‘em,” the long-time Heartbreakers tour manager said as he looked out over the 36,000-plus that gathered in one of America’s most famed baseball cathedrals.

And did Tom and the guys ever deliver!

Sometimes the best shows of a tour come in the unlikeliest of places.

A Sunday show in Portland, Maine after an insane, sold-out show at Boston’s historic Fenway Park may have appeared at face to be a potential anti-climatic pitfall, but Tom and the guys sensed the intimacy of the gig and room and brought it full-bore to the capacity crowd in Maine.

For their last show in Canada, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers brought their A-game to Montreal’s Bell Centre, feeding of the French-Canadian crowd’s energy to play one of the best shows of the Hypnotic Eye tour to date.

“A Woman In Love (It’s Not Me)” is quickly becoming a mid-show staple on this run. It’s a dynamic tune that features multiple band members and has one of the best first lyrical stanzas in rock history.

She laughed in my face, told me good-bye
Said “Don’t think about it, you can go crazy
Anything can happen, anything can end
    Don’t try to fight

“I don’t know what they call this place now, but I’ll always know it as Pine Knob!”

The mere mention of the venue’s original name elicited an eardrum-rattling roar from the 15,000-plus that packed the DTE Energy Music Theatre.

Sunday was a special day on the Hypnotic Eye tour. With lots of family in attendance on a gorgeous Michigan summer night, Tom and the band were all excited for a rare outdoor show on this arena tour.

It’s so cool to see how the audience reacts when they recognize a song.

At the United Center in Chicago on Saturday night, it only took hearing those three familiar guitar licks from Mike Campbell for fans to scream with approval at the beginning of “I Won’t Back Down.”

A lot of Tom’s songs are like that. Whether big rock anthems or acoustic ballads, these songs are familiar to us, engrained in the soundtrack of our lives.

Around 4 pm every show day, Steve Winwood and his band sound check onstage.

Some days, they work on songs for their set; other days, they just jam.

Whether it’s material from Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith or his solo career, Winwood’s opening set has been outstanding every night and warmed up the crowd perfectly for the Heartbreakers. In Winnipeg, “Dear Mr. Fantasy” was the highlight of their hour-long set, with Winwood taking two blistering extended guitar solos that brought the Canadian crowd to its feet.

    August 19, 2014

The Heartbreakers are a crack blues band.

That side of Tom and the band’s musical personality was pressed to wax with Mojo, and it was again on full display Tuesday night at the Saddledome with a snarling cover of “Baby Please Don’t Go,” the often-covered blues standard credited to Delta bluesman Big Joe Williams.

Tom embodies the conflicted storyteller role, and the band rages behind him, Mike Campbell firing nasty, brain-rattling guitar leads in between verses.

The new songs are taking hold.

With Hypnotic Eye still cruising on the charts after opening as the number one record in North America, Tom and the band are getting more and more comfortable with the new songs each night, stretching them in places and discovering new avenues for improvisation and exploration.

“American Dream Plan B” rocked the Rexall Center in Edmonton early in the set, and after a bright and airy “Into The Great Wide Open,” “Forgotten Man” delivered once again, the song’s dark, menacing vibe matched perfectly with Tom’s vocals.
