“Do you have a minute? James Worthy is outside in the hall and wants to come say hello.”

Tom looked up from his seat in his dressing room backstage at The Forum and smiled. A long-time Lakers fan, Tom knew all too well what it meant to have Big Game James come calling in the building he and his Showtime Laker teammates made famous. Hopping up from his seat, Tom crossed the room just as the Hall of Fame power forward and current Lakers commentator opened the door, and the two laughed and smiled while shaking hands.

Stories about the challenges recording “Refugee” are legendary, but you would never know it when seeing Tom and the band play the second single off Damn The Torpedoes.

It’s the song that whips the crowd into a frenzy at the end of the show, a sonic maelstrom led by Mike Campbell’s searing guitar solo that typically finds the Heartbreaker guitarist way off stage right playing to fans at the edge of the stage.

It’s the exclamation point on the Heartbreakers’ set every night.

    Red Rocks Amphitheater

    Morrison, CO

    September 30, October 1 & October 3, 2014

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ 2014 run at Red Rocks Amphitheater was a tale of three shows.

The first night was the coldest of the three night. Steve Winwood and company warmed the stage up with a beautiful set, the legendary English rocker’s debut at Red Rocks after more than 50 years in music. Wrapped up in coats, hats and scarves, Tom and the guys took the stage and rocked for the next two hours despite the falling temperatures.

On night two, the rains came, a steady drizzle that started during

“Was it today? Yesterday? Anyone know when it happened?”

Tom stood outside of his dressing room with Benmont, the bandmates hovering of a smartphone.

“It was last night according to this report,” said the Heartbreakers long-time keyboard player. “I think it would be good for us to do it.”

After the band wound down “Free Fallin,” Tom stepped to the mike.

“One of our favorite bands from the ‘60s that put out some of the greatest singles was Paul Revere & the Raiders,” Tom said.

    BOK Center
    Tulsa, OK
    September 28, 2014

Tulsa will always be a special place for Tom and the band.

It was here that Mudcrutch met Denny Cordell on their way to Los Angeles and the producer ultimately signed them to Shelter Records.

Cordell isn’t the only mentor the band has had from Tulsa. J.J. Cale also hailed from Tulsa, and was a huge influence on Tom and the guys.

So after the last notes of “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” rang out in the BOK Center, Tom stepped to the mike and said, “We’ve had some very special friends from right here in Tulsa, and it’s good to be back!”

    So

Every fan should get to stand behind Mike Campbell while he plays “I Should Have Known It.”
I found myself behind the Heartbreakers co-captain and lead guitarist’s amp line Friday night at Dallas’ American Airlines Center just as Mike tore into the blistering opening riff of the Mojo standout.

Mike is well-known as Tom’s songwriting and producing partner, but he’s also one of the great, great rock ‘n roll guitar players of all time, skilled on a multitude of instruments, creative in the sounds he gets and tasteful in always
