Beacon Theatre Night Two: Recap, Photos & Set List!

    Beacon Theatre
    New York, NY

    May 21, 2013

Tuesday was the second night of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ five-show residency at New York’s Beacon Theatre, coming hot on the heels of Monday’s instant-classic concert.

While Tuesday night offered up more tour debuts, #1 hits and deep cuts, it was a moment early in the concert that really showed how much fun Tom and the guys are having on this tour.

As the cheers died down after the band ended “When The Time Comes” off You’re Gonna Get It, Benmont Tench turned toward his Hammond organ and glanced out across the stage at his bandmates from underneath his white fedora. Tom and Mike Campbell were busy switching guitars, but Ron Blair caught Benmont’s eye, and the two old friends smiled a taciturn grin. Mike turned around from strapping on his sunburst Gibson and instantly caught the vibe. When Tom finished readying his guitar and amp, he, too, peeked around the stage to see if everyone was ready and was soon smiling widely along with Ben, Mike and Ron. Soon Steve and Scott joined in, and with a quick nod from Tom, Benmont launched into the iconic organ riff that opens “Green Onions.”

You couldn’t wipe the grins of the guys’ faces as they served up a spot-on cover of the legendary Booker T. & the MGs instrumental, no doubt a song they grew up hearing from one of their musical heroes. Whether the smiles were about the song they were about to play or just a general acknowledgment of how much fun they’re having on this tour, no one will ever really know, and I’m not sure it even matters.

We’re off on Wednesday but back to the Beacon Theatre on Thursday!

Heartbroken in nj, house flooded and can't use two tix loge d108. I am willing to give away because I can't get there. Is there any way to give away the tix with only two hours before the show?

Mark of a great show:
1. Songs that make you cry,
2. Losing your voice from screaming so much,
3. Being sore as heck from dancing.
Thank you Tom and the Heartbreakers!
