Red Rocks Amphitheater: Recap, Setlist, Photos

    Red Rocks Amphitheater
    Morrison, CO
    September 30, October 1 & October 3, 2014

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ 2014 run at Red Rocks Amphitheater was a tale of three shows.

The first night was the coldest of the three night. Steve Winwood and company warmed the stage up with a beautiful set, the legendary English rocker’s debut at Red Rocks after more than 50 years in music. Wrapped up in coats, hats and scarves, Tom and the guys took the stage and rocked for the next two hours despite the falling temperatures.

On night two, the rains came, a steady drizzle that started during Steve Winwood’s set and continued right through the Heartbreakers’ encore and ebbed and flowed throughout the show. Mr. Winwood sat in with Tom and the guys on “Can’t Find My Way Home” and “Gimme Some Lovin,” providing a spark to the set.

Night three was the highlight of the run. Not only did the weather remain at bay and the temperatures rise, but the music was at its best. Mike Campbell sat in with Winwood and his band on the Blind Faith scorcher “Had to Cry Today,” dueling with Winwood on guitar. Tom and the band took the stage to huge applause and cheers and responded with perhaps the best show of the entire tour, throwing a rare “Don’t Do Me Like That” into the beginning of the show and a spot-on cover of Little Feat’s “Willin’.”

We were at the October 1st show, and something about the rain made the night even better. There was a mystical quality to it. Tom and the band seemed to sense it from the crowd, and they seemed to be feeding off of that energy as well. The whole night was incredible!
