The celebration of the return of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers to the stage for the kickoff of their 2012 Tour was dampened a bit on Thursday with the news of the passing of Levon Helm, the legendary drummer for The Band. But in true Heartbreaker fashion, Tom and the band chose not to mourn Helm but to celebrate the incredible life he lived with a powerhouse set of two-plus hours of music that left the sold-out crowd at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, CO cheering for more.

"You Wreck Me" and "Here Comes My Girl" also got everyone dancing and singing along early in the set and just as the final notes of "Handle With Care" rang out (which Tom dedicated, "to all those Wilbury guys, wherever they are traveling tonight"), Tom stepped quietly to the microphone to say a few words about Helm.

"We lost a good friend today, Levon Helm," Tom said. "Levon was one of the greatest human beings that ever was and a friend of everyone in this band. We're gonna play this one for him."

The Best of Everything, the album-closing track off Southern Accents, was an apt choice to honor Helm, but one couldn't help but wonder if the Turkey Scratch, Arkansas native might have enjoyed more the monstrous "Something Big" that followed, a bluesy stomper with a driving rhythm thats any drummer's dream.

This is really disappointing! Spent all morning trying to get tix through the links here. Just now got access to the ticket purchase, even though teh tix were supposed to go on sale at 10 am. The only tix are "Floor General Admission", even though the venue's seat map shows floor sections. And when I looked at ticket sites, there are seats being sold for the different floor sections (i.e AAA, BBB, CCC, etc.). Anyone know what's going on here? This is really upsetting since we bougth airfare to Denver for tehat weekend already!
jnagel929's picture

I doubt it, too. But if so, I'd love to hear Psychotic Addiction. They rarely play it on the radio. Also, hoping my seats are decent - as I pushed refresh for an hour waiting for the ticket horse site to come up. It never did and I called to get in another way... We're traveling a long ways for a row 15 seat...
violets's picture

Yesterday this site said the tickets would be on sale here on 1/10 - now it says on sale 1/14? What happened? There is no explanation! At least could we know why I took today off to buy tickets and now I have to wait 4 more days? Why did you have 1/10 up as the buy date just yesterday!!??

Phew, got them finally but they sure didn't make it easy. I had to access directly from the TicketHorse site, not the TP site per the instructions...they should be linked. Great seats though. Stoked. Looking forward to a great show at a great venue.

I just bought my Tom Petty tickets and am more than excited to finally see him. I have been one of his biggest fans (if not his biggest fan) since I was 12 years old. I have always dreamed of being able to go to one of his concerts; it has been someone that I honestly have always wanted, but I never thought I would actually get the opportunity. When I found out he was going on tour, I couldn't contain my excitement, especially when I found out that he would be in Colorado when I would be heading home from college for the summer. It is perfect timing. I'm finally having my only dream become reality, and I am the happiest girl in the world, because I am finally getting to see the one person I admire most, live in concert. Thank you for the opportunity of a lifetime for me. I can't wait. ~Sarah Poole

I've lost count how many times I have seen TP&HB, RedRocks is my favorite venue, but totally thrilled that Colorado is the first stop on 2012 tour! Excited to see Campbell wail on the guitar, Benmont hammer the keyboards, & Tom rock the arena with new music and memorable tunes !

You get a ticket on the side, not in front of the stage. RIPOFF

jnagel, regular tickets will be available in the pre-sale as well. I'm going to the Albuqueque show and there are two prices, $60 and $114.15.

Doubt anyone from the Petty camp actually looks at these forums, but on the off chance.... would love to hear Magnolia. Always loved that song, never heard it live.

Thanks for keeping your word Tom! Ive been waiting months for this to come! Althougth this will be my first Im very excited tht I will be in your presence finally. I have alot of questions still I am hoping you can answer some of them. Cant hardly wait for the show! Much love, Brian

Is the only ticket in the presale the "premium package" for $250?
jnagel929's picture

Any plans to come out to our fare city and play at the Fillmore again? It's been way too long.

Dont' by presale tickets at the beginning, Sticketmaster gives "best available" seats in the back of the floor first, then about an hour or two after they open they sell better seats...why do they do this? Only Sticketmaster knows. By the way don't expect anything too great on the presale as they have the rip-off $250 seats in the 1st 15 can buy those but they won't tell you what seats you are getting until a few days before the show...gee, wondering if anything is going on there?? Petty is great but the ticket sale sucks. I guess it's all about the money now Mr. Petty. My name's Joe....I'm the C.E.O. You get to be famous, I get to be rich...

Mojo is an incredible piece of work and I'm a Petty fan from the 70's. Looking forward to the show.

HEY HEY HEY Broomfield show on the WAY! If you play any other shows around town let me know. You HAVE my number:)!

People, listen to Mojo three times and tell me it isn't a very good record... some great stuff on there. Actually sounds classic. Petty always great live, plays Colorado a lot and we never miss him. The Red Rocks shows are the best, but that Fiddler's show was good, and the Mile High Music Fest w/Steve Winwood jamming also rocked. Mike Campbell is the most underrated guitar player in rock n' roll.

Is there a limit to the number of pre-sale tickets Highway Companion members can buy during this tour? I know they usually only allow 4 tickets per show, but in the past they capped the number of presales a member could participate in. Any info would be appreciated cause I'm wanting to see him at three different venues! Thanks.
arvada_mark's picture

That Red Rocks show was sweet, but you all can't knock the venue in Broomfield. I've seen a couple shows there now & it is a great concert hall. Not really a bad seat in the house. Plus, it's so small. I heard something like only 6500 seats. Everybody will be close to the Heartbreakers...and Tom, too. Can't wait. Just hope I don't have to sell any vital organs to afford it. I'm not saying I won't, I'd just rather not. 4/19/ a day?

surprised someone actually complained about your new stuff on here. if i get to come to the colorado show i will be paying good money for the ticket and you can play whatever you want!!!! it must have been fun being a Traveling Wilbury. ROCK ON MAN!!!!!

I am so excited!! the last time i saw you in concert was in may of 2001 at the Tweeter center in Camden NJ. I was 5th row center. This was my very first concert!!! When i was growing up i would always tell my dad that i was going to marry you :) He gave me my first cassette tape Full Moon Fever when i was 5. I still have it and it still plays to this day... I can not wait to see you again ~Brianna Benson~

MOJO is an excellent album. New and old songs, see you in Broomfield, CO. How about a San Diego show around Labor Day? That would be great.
mstancik's picture

Saw you at Red Rocks a few years back and can't wait to see you again in April!
jeanniemwilkinson's picture

Please circle back in the summer to Red Rocks! Until then see you in Broomfield!
smartgal360's picture

When looking at another person's comment, I saw that they requested that new stuff should be played, but honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of anything off of Mojo. It's basically songs from all the other albums that are actually good, and those are the songs that I'd prefer to hear. Especially since this will be the first--and probably only--concert that I will be able to go to. I'm going to be paying decent money to go to a concert that I've been dying to go to for a long time, and the other person has been to one previously and therefore, opinions should be disregarded. You don't even have to take my opinions into consideration; It would just be nice if I had songs that I could sing along to (and actually know)

I have been a hudge fan and passed that on to my Daughter whos biggest dream was to see Tom Petty. She passed away two years ago and her sisters and I were hoping to see the Red Rocks Show in her memory but were unable to attend imagine how excited we were to see we get another chance! And in Broomfield that makes it taht much more personal!! Cannot wait!
