Klipsch Music Center - Noblesville, IN

By population standards, 25,000 people might be considered a big town or a small city, but when the same amount of people stretching back as far as you can see all stand up at the exact same time and erupt in screams and cheers, it sucks all the oxygen out of the space and literally takes your breath away.

That’s what it felt like standing on the lip of the stage Saturday night at the Klipsch Music Center outside Indianapolis when the house lights dropped and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers returned for the first time since 2010.

The band has a long history with the venue formerly known as Deer Creek, having played many great shows there over the years including a legendary sold-out show in 2008 amid a thunderstorm that culminated with lightning striking the venue and knocking out power during “Refugee.”

Saturday night was also a sell out, with 24,765 fans packing the outdoor amphitheater to set a new venue attendance record. Internet chatter prior to the show speculated on what Tom and the band would change from the recent shows in New York and Los Angeles, which focused more on the deeper album tracks and special covers. “Rock & Roll Star” remained in the lead-off spot and got things off on the right foot, but it was “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” – moved up to the fifth song in the set – that was the highlight of the night and got the crowd rockin’ early with its nod to their home state:

“She grew up in an Indiana town,
Had a good lookin' mama who never was around.
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night.”

    Set List:

We've been to so many Tom Petty concerts, I've lost count. Each time we say "best concert ever", but honestly I don't think it has ever been better than the concert this night in Indiana on June 15, 2013! Unbelievable! Thank you Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for decades of amazing music. Thanks for coming back to Deer Creek :)

5th TPHB concert and the best yet! The crowd was great and the band looked like they were truly having a good time. When they are having fun, we have fun, and vice versa. The guy sitting next to me hadn't been to a concert before and admitted he wasn't that big of a fan. Well by Mary Jane's last dance he was up dancing with me and left saying this was best concert he's attended. I loved hearing "Yer So Bad". And "Melinda" was rockin'. And I think "I Should of Known It" might be my new favorite live song!! Great job boys! This mama didn't mind paying the babysitter extra!

Words can not even come close to describing how amazing this show was.  It's only my 5th time seeing Petty, but I have never seen any live band put on shows like these guys do.  I honestly wish I could start this past weekend all over again.  Just amazing.  I really hope they tour again next year when the new album comes out.  I don't know if the band reads all these messages or not, but if by chance they do, all I can say is Thank You so much for an unforgettable show.

That was the best TP&TH show I have seen at Noblesville, IN.  I have seen them 5 times here.  I especially loved the version of "Learning to Fly".  I was hoping that there might be a way to buy that version.

The year that the power went out at the show due to a storm was 2006, not 2008.

We had a great fan meet-up of people from the message boards and "Tom Petty Friends" group on facebook. I wish I could post photos on the message boards like we used to be able to. It was a great show! Thank you Tom, Mike, Benmont, Ron, Steve, and Scott!!!!
