Minneapolis: Recap, Photos & Set List!

    June 29, 2013

    Target Center, Minneapolis, MN

Twenty-one concerts may seem like a lot, but time tends to fly in Heartbreaker land.

That's right where we stood Saturday night at a standing-room-only crowd at the Target Center in Minneapolis where Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers wrapped up their 2013 Summer Tour, one final performance before heading back to California for down time before returning to the studio to complete work on an as-yet unnamed album to be released next year.

As the last notes of The Smithereens' opening set rang out across the Target Center, Tom and the guys gathered in a backstage hallway, laughing with friends and thanking crew members for their hard work as they headed to the stage to prep for the band's set.

Though the setlist closely mirrored the previous night in Milwaukee, Tom and the guys seemed to play with their hair on fire for the last show in Minneapolis, as if they aimed to leave everything on the stage before the tour came to a close. Everyone onstage played with incredible energy and appreciation for the crowd cheering in the first few rows, who held up signs and called the band members' names in between songs.

"Tonight is the last night of our U.S. tour," Tom said to the crowd before "American Girl." "Thank you so much, Minneapolis! We'll see you again soon!"

    Set List:

    Rock & Roll Star

After many years of trying, I finally made it to The Show in Minneapolis on June 29, 2013. I made sure i got to see Tom & the boys this time by buying our tickets in the pre-sale, which required me to join this club, which is now giving me the opportunity to write a bit about the greatest concert i have ever been to, and i have seen some of the best. I will add now that though I had never seen Tom & The Heartbreakers, I knew this evening was going to be special, so i turned down an offer of just under a thousand dollars to sell my two tickets, even though my new, young business I recently started surely would have benefited greatly from that extra cash flow. After just two songs i looked at my Girl and said "thank God I did not sell these tickets".  I am still in awe. From the tightness in every tune to the dudes working the mixers and everything in between. I could not believe the sound quality being put out at The Target Center! The crescendos Tom, Mike etal worked into every song from Mary Jane to King were friggin' phenomenol! I have never witnessed slower, acoustic melodies and vocals morph into such a frenzy of free-flying guitar licks and driving percussions, all exploding together with such euphoric spirit. You left it all out there. I am still so moved by what I was a part of on this night. Song after song after song. And it was the audience whose hair caught fire too!

Lets face it - the reason I came to this show was to see the man himself - Tom Petty - the song-writer, the vocalist and the musician. I wanted to see him perform his art live. With such a deep library of work I could not imagine where this show would go. But man, did he throw it all out there or what? I simply could not have asked for more Tom. How do you do that night after night, year after year? To Tom's Co-Captain, Mike Campbell: i am speechless. Now I say "i have seen Santana, VanHalen, B.B. AND Campbell.

Thanx for the sweet memories,

Chris

ps-where do i get my 14 live downloads? I am going into withdrawals. Help me please!!!

What a great show! My 12-year old daughter has been a huge fan for three years now. She has every song available from iTunes on her iPod, and is now in the process of collecting every TPATH album. We took her as a belated birthday present and she is still thanking us a week later. Thanks for much for a wonderful show and great memories.

My 17 year old son and I made this our summer "boys" trip this year. We live in Chicago, drove to Milwaukee and saw the concert on Friday night, visited UW-Madison Saturday afternoon, went to Minneapolis to see the show Saturday night and flew home Sunday morning.

Great show and outstanding energy both nights!!!!!

I hope the new record brings another tour in 2014...looking forward to both.

I see in the set list that one is missing that's one of Tom's better songs.  "Saving Grace", such a simply written song but, a great rocking song too.  The Heartbreakers play this one great too.  Hope to see it on future set list and if you guys come to Chicago I would love to see the band with Thomas live and in real color.  Keep on rocking guys.  JAD
