Losing JJ Cale is losing an American musical treasure. Always under the radar, he has been, and will always be, a huge inspiration to me and the band.
Luckily, I had the pleasure of playing with him several times. He was always gracious and treated me like a friend.
Whenever I listen to music, it is nearly always one of his records. He had a gift for the sweetest groove, the sweetest guitar phrase, and the coolest lyrics- understated, but deep. "I'm not a homeless man - I'm a gypsy by trade and I'm traveling this land" is one of my favorites.
His guitar tone and touch were magical

Target Center, Minneapolis, MN
Twenty-one concerts may seem like a lot, but time tends to fly in Heartbreaker land.
That's right where we stood Saturday night at a standing-room-only crowd at the Target Center in Minneapolis where Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers wrapped up their 2013 Summer Tour, one final performance before heading back to California for down time before returning to the studio to complete work on an as-yet unnamed album to be released next year.
As the last notes of The Smithereens' opening set rang out across the Target Center, Tom and the guys

Marcus Amphitheater, Milwaukee, WI
Rain, wind and some unseasonably cooler weather threatened to damper Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' triumphant return to SummerFest, the band's first trip back to Milwaukee since the 2010 Mojo tour.
Stronger heads ultimately prevailed as the storm blew over and gave way to a thunderous, two-hour rock show. "I Won't Back Down" brought the crowd to its feet, "Here Comes My Girl" got 'em singing and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" got 'em moving, but it was "Woman in Love (It's Not Me)" - the second single off Hard Promises - where the moment

Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, NY
Coming off a huge headlining performance Saturday night at the Firefly Music Festival, Tom and the guys didn't step off the gas Sunday at the Saratoga Springs Performing Arts Center, rocking thousands of Heartbreakers fans at a venue that's been a staple on the band's summer tours for more than three decades.
"Saratoga Springs, it's good to see you!" Tom said after "Love Is A Long Road," waving to the packed amphitheater. "I hope you don't have any plans to go anywhere, 'cause we're ready to go!"

Firefly Music Festival, Dover, DE
The Firefly Music Festival - held on four stages over three days at the 87-acre Woodlands of Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware - is a relatively young festival in just its second year but has amassed an impressive lineup for its 2013 edition.
Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined the festival on Friday night and Foster the People was slated for Sunday, leaving Tom and the band atop Saturday night's bill with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alabama Shakes, Jim James and Japandroids preceding them with great sets on the Main Stage.

"Melinda" - a track released only on 2009's Live Anthology box set - has quickly become a favorite on the 2013 summer tour.
A slow-burning cowboy love ballad, "Melinda" begins with Tom alone, just his voice and acoustic guitar.
"When I get four hundred dollars
I'm going to see Melinda
Because I've been working, I've been saving
for a ticket to Melinda
And I just don't care
what you have to say
Because I'm getting up in the morning
And I'm off the see Melinda"
