For the first two months of Tom Petty & the
Heartbreakers’ 40th Anniversary tour, Joe Walsh has opened nearly
every show, so the mood was bittersweet last Friday at the Prudential
Center in
Newark, NJ as it was the last night out with the legendary Eagles
his incredible band and amazing crew.

“Welcome to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ 40th
Anniversary tour,” Walsh said as his nine-piece band took the stage for
final time in Newark, “with special guest, me.”

Joe’s laid-back vibe and great show have made for an
incredible pairing to start the 40th

During “You Don’t Know How It Feels” in Hartford, CT on Wednesday night, Tom was preparing to take a guitar solo after the final verse when Benmont Tench III launched into a beautiful solo on his Steinway concert grand piano on stage right.

The surprise may have caused a musical traffic jam onstage for most bands, but not with Tom and guys.  Looking up from his Stratocaster, Tom glanced across the stage at Benmont as he unwound his solo and simply pointed at his long-time bandmate and friend and smiled.

As many times as Tom and the band have played “Free Fallin’” since the release of Full Moon Fever back in 1989, the song always delivers.

Maybe it’s the beautiful simplicity with which it begins: Mike and Tom standing together in the spotlight at the center of an otherwise pitch-black stage, Rickenbacker guitars as their side.

Or maybe it’s the anthemic chorus, just five words that Tom sings twice over the top of soaring guitars, keys, bass and drums.

Or it could be the universality of the lyric.

Megan Hinds’ eyes widened as she brought her hand up to cover her mouth, which was now hanging open.

The long-time Heartbreakers fan and her father Frank had won a contest through Tom Petty Radio on Sirius XM that granted the Hinds’ the opportunity to meet Tom and the band backstage before the show in Cleveland.

In her hands, Megan held a few photos and other items she and Frank brought with them to have the guys autograph, but all of those things were cast aside when the band walked in the dressing room, and Mike handed Megan his hat.

PPG Paints Arena

It’s midnight in Pittsburgh, about an hour after the show went down and just 24 hours after the Pittsburgh Penguins, the main tenant of PPG Paints Arena where Tom and the band played tonight, beat the Nashville Predators 6-0 at the arena to win Game 5 of the 2017 NHL Stanley Cup.

Most everyone in the Heartbreakers camp is a sports fan, so televisions backstage in the dressing rooms, production or catering are always typically tuned to a game of some sort, whether it’s playoff hockey or basketball, auto racing or European soccer.
