“Take as long as you want with it, really. We’ll just hang back. Whenever you’re ready to sing, just step up to the mike.”

Tom nodded at Steve Winwood as Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench started the melody to “Can’t Find My Way Home,” the Blind Faith classic penned by Winwood. Talk of onstage collaboration has been percolating all tour, but the rubber finally hit the road in the City of Brotherly Love. Rehearsals went well, and just after “U Get Me High,” Tom brought out their legendary tourmate.

“Every so often, we get the chance to play with one of our heroes,” he said.

“U Get Me High” is shaping into the big rocker on this tour that Tom and the guys envisioned when they recorded it for Hypnotic Eye.

Usually slotted in the set list about halfway through the show, the current single off the new album gets the crowd moving and singing along. Michael Brown, the tour’s lighting designer, has created a technicolor rainbow look for it that vibes well with the lyrics and music. It’s quickly becoming a fan favorite.

Ever since it hit the setlist a few weeks back, “A Woman In Love (It’s Not Me)” has been an absolute showstopper.

It starts with Benmont Tench’s long, building piano intro before slamming straight away into a blistering guitar riff from Mike Campbell and a churning rhythm laid down by Steve Ferrone, Ron Blair and Scott Thurston. When Tom finally steps to the mike, the fire has been lit, and he delivers one of the greatest opening lines in rock history.

“Well, fellas, let’s go get ‘em,” Tom said as the band assembled in the hallway outside their dressing rooms. “It’s our party tonight.”

There’s nothing like playing the Big Apple. Everyone gets excited for New York City, and the biggest gig in town is Madison Square Garden.

“It’s so good to be back in the Greatest Rock ‘n Roll Arena in the World!” Tom said at the end of “Mary Jane’s Last Dance. “We’re gonna give you the industrial-size, full-strength rock show tonight!”
